Two great posts.

I think at the beginning a great tone will not be important but as you progress in your guitar playing you will begin to pick up what sound and tone you actually like.

Your ear will pick up what it likes.

Hey Robert,

For developing killer guitar tone I've found that using heavy strings is helpful. For electric I usually play with .11s. I run this through a booster (Keeley modded Blues Driver) and then a reverb, then into my Fender Champ. I've bought lots of pedals over the years but lately I go by the philosophy of KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid!

I've found that most pedals do nothing to add to my sound. I'm not even sure why I obsessively buy new pedals all of the time when they don't end up in my processing chain!

Hope you don't mind if I leave a link back to my website. =) Boston Guitar Lessons

Best,
Greg

I like to use hybrid strings. 10s on the top three string for a thicker sound and 9s on the bottom 3 for easier bends.

I'm not a big pedal person either. Some distortion pedals are pretty cool, but I mostly go through my amp. When I teacher Guitar Lessons In Boston I don't put a lot of emphasis on pedals with my students, but some do have pedal boards and wah-wahs they bring along.
