Edward Van Halen U S Festival Solo

FROM: Bob molton

Guitar Friends,

Here's a Guitar Lesson Video for all of you Edward Van Halen Fans!!

It's Eddie Van Halen's US Festival Guitar Solo. Tons of cool guitar ideas to experiment with here.

This is a bit strange, in that, Van Halen was not aware that they would be playing the show until just days before, and then the pressure was on to get the band together and ready to do the show. They were on a break, and David Lee Roth was in the Amazon when he was notified to return for the show.

Not too bad for slapping it together after a long break.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Mar 13, 12:47 AM (ET)By DAVID BAUDER

NEW YORK (AP) - Two of the biggest rock bands of the 1980s took different paths to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday - indie favorites R.E.M. with a happy reunion and party band Van Halen with a fragmentary turnout.

Otherwise, the hall took on a New York flavor with the girl group sound of Spanish Harlem's the Ronettes, downtown poet Patti Smith and South Bronx's Grandmaster Flash, the first hip-hop act so honored.

The rock hall's 22nd annual induction ceremony was the first beamed live to the world, through VH1 Classic and aol.com.

Out of Athens, Ga., R.E.M. largely invented the college radio scene in the 1980s with songs like "Radio Free Europe," then became mainstream stars behind hits "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts."

(AP) Sammy Hagar, left, and Michael Anthony, both of Van Halen, appear in the press room after the band...Full Image"R.E.M.'s music is truly all-encompassing," said Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, who inducted them. "They used every color on the pallette, they invented colors on their own and they put up this huge mural of music and sound and emotion."

Vedder said singer Michael Stipe's voice touched his heart even though, in the early years, he couldn't understand a word he was singing.

R.E.M performed again Monday with its original quartet, welcoming back drummer Bill Berry, who had left the band in 1997 after suffering an aneurysm onstage two years earlier. Stipe said his late grandmother once grabbed him by the arm and said what R.E.M. means to her is "remember every moment. And this is a moment I shall never forget."

Only Van Halen's second lead singer, Sammy Hagar, and ex-bass player Michael Anthony turned up for their induction. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen has just gone into rehab and original lead singer David Lee Roth stayed away in a tiff over what he would perform.

(AP) Patti Smith performs on stage after she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in New York,...Full Image Hagar said he wished his bandmates could be there, but "it's out of our control."
"It's hard for Mike and I to be up here to do this, but you couldn't have kept me away from this with a shotgun," Hagar said. It took less to keep Roth away. He stood up the hall, reportedly because he couldn't agree on what to sing with the band Velvet Revolver, which offered a tribute. Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Hall of Fame, said Roth was offered a chance to sing a song of his choice with the house band. "The decision not to come was solely his, not ours."Hagar and Anthony joined Velvet Revolver to sing "Why Can't This Be Love."

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five represented the first of what may someday be many hip-hop artists. Flash's turntable scratching techniques and the memorable refrain of "The Message" - "don't push me 'cause I'm close to the edge" - were recalled.

(AP) Singer Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones talks at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction...Full ImageHunched over a podium, present-day rapper Jay-Z read his induction speech off a PDA.

"Thirty years later rappers have become rock stars, movie stars, leaders, educators, philanthropists, even CEOs," he said. "None of this would have been possible without the work of these men."

Flash said he thought there was a time his induction wouldn't be possible because they were a hip-hop act. But he said there are plenty of rock influences in what he did.

Shy and fighting back tears as she accepted induction, Smith recalled friends and family who didn't live to see the day. Shortly before he died, Smith's husband Fred "Sonic" Smith asked her when she did make the hall of fame to "please accept it like a lady and not to say any curse words." The bohemian poet straddled the hippie and punk eras, with her album "Horses" setting a standard for literate rock.

She performed her biggest hit, "Because the Night," co-written with Bruce Springsteen, and the Rolling Stones' classic "Gimme Shelter." Smith's mother also didn't live to see her daughter make the hall of fame, but passed on some instructions. "I'm not going to make it," she recalled her mother saying. "When you do, sing your mother's favorite song, the one I like to vaccuum to." Saying "this is for you, mom," Smith performed her 1977 song "Rock 'n' Roll N-----."

With jewelry dangling from his hair, a mustachioed Keith Richards inducted the Ronettes, the New York City girl group who sang 1960s era pop symphonies like "Be My Baby" and "Baby I Love You." He recalled hearing them the first time on a tour together in England. "They could sing all their way right through a wall of sound," Richards said. "They didn't need anything. They touched my heart right there and then and they touch it still."

Lead singer Ronnie Spector thanked a list of people from Cher to Springsteen to her publicist - but made no mention of ex-husband Phil Spector, the producer whose gigantic "wall of sound" is synonymous with the act. Phil Spector's trial for the murder of an actress at his suburban Los Angeles mansion is due to start next week. After the Ronettes sang a trio of their hits, bandleader Paul Shaffer came to the microphone to read a note from Phil Spector, who said "I wish them all the happiness and good fortune the world has to offer."

Hall officials paid tribute to one of the institution's founders, record executive Ahmet Ertegun, who died in December. One of his top artists at Atlantic, Aretha Franklin, sang the first million-seller she made with Ertegun, "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)."

Speed Picking With TSO

Guitar Speed Picking with Trans-Siberian Orchestra,

Here's another quick lesson in the importance of techniques for speed picking and getting great guitar tone.

As we left off earlier we spoke about several techniques to use when trying to get the best flow and create un-interupted flow.

This time we'll focus on getting the best tones from our picking, and what
types of picks to use.

Rule #1.) ALWAYS use a firm pick.
My suggestion would be (Heavy)

Rule#2.) Use a pick that gives you the best tone with the least drag.
My suggestion would be (Nylon - Heavy)

Rule #3.) Find the main picking sweet spot between the bridge and neck.
My suggestion would be directly in (front of the rear pickup).

Keep in mind as you move your picking hand towards the neck it will change the tone to a warmer sweeter sound,as you move towards the bridge it's getts brighter with more bite.

The trick is to find your sweet spots on the guitar and use them in conjuntion with each other. This gives you much more control over your sound when you do this.

Example: If you were playing a guitar lead, and were picking in the rear position in front of the bridge, then suddenly move up to the neck area and begin picking in that area, you'll notice a drastic change in tone.

With this being said you'll want to find the spot that suit you best and get use to using the areas on command.

This is also a huge secret in developing your own sound. It allows you to play any guitar on any amp and always sound like you!!

That's big time folks!!

Video Example of all the elements we've gone over in the previous lessons, You can view a complete song with rythm and lead playing incorporating all the dynamics and elements.

The song is Titled: "Wizard In Winter" By: Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Note:

  • The syncronization of the picking at the end of the song...
  • The alternating strokes up and down only...
  • The dynamics, tone, and sweet spots...

These are thing you'll want to spend a good amount of time on because they will become your signature.

Things will also begin to get a whole lot easier as well. Syncronized picking is like the difference between walking fast and running all out. You want to have control over both.

More later, Keep practicing...

3 Killer Tips for Speed Picking Guitar

Hey Guitar Heads!

Here's a quick lesson of what you should be doing at all times to gain the maximum impact from your speed picking techniques.

First and foremost, it's never too late to improve upon a technique you may think you already have down. Or worse, having developed an in-correct picking habit and can't seem to break it or even realize it.

Here's a few killer tips to follow:
  1. Use a firm pick - Preferably HEAVY - Preferably NYLON
  2. Use the very TIP of the pick - I'm talking about the depth of a hair folks!
  3. Use ALTERNATE picking ONLY - this simply means down-up-down-up-down-up etc...
  4. Use a METRONOME to practice with daily.
  5. Use your guitar practice time wisely.

One thing that many guitar players seem to have in common is that they don't really know how to practice properly. This is a whole other topic that I'll dig into in later days, but it is important that you know a few things about practicing properly.

When you practice your guitar playing, play with a metronome and find a number on the dial that lets you play the riff or lick at a speed you can comfortably play repetitive over and over without mistakes.

Not 80% of it perfect and 20% sloppy, not 95% perfect and 5% sloppy, All of it perfect.

Look at the clock, then play the (riff/lick) 100 times in a row. Count them. 100 times.

Notice when you're done playing 100 times, it really didn't take that long. You'll notice the improvements taking place immediately though. This gets really exciting!!

Use the exact above technique to practice for a half hour solid. No breaks.

If you do this correctly you'll get more out of a half hour than most people would get out of 3 hours of non-productive practice.

Take this to the bank! If you want to sharpen your speed picking skills to a razors edge, this is where it's at my friends.

Check back soon as I'll Be posting more killer insider guitar information.

More later,

Speed Picking Guitar

Guitar Speed Picking Techniques

Hello guitar heads! Robert Lee Molton here, coming at you with some killer
insider information on “Speed Picking Guitar”.

Have you ever wondered how guitarists play so clean and fast with articulate picking control? This is an issue that has many of us scratching our heads, and some of us flat out stumped!!

There is a solution that works for everyone, if you want it bad enough.

The formula is simply this:

Right and left hand synchronization + Practice = Fast smooth
playing
!

I know, I know, it may sound obvious, but it’s only when you really start to analyze this process slowly, that you will begin to see the issues that can cause serious long-term problems. Ultimately the goal is to achieve un-interrupted flow.

You must pay close attention to what’s happening with your left and right hand, if you want to gain real speed in the end.

There is a difference between playing fast, and just flat out ripping! I think you know what I mean. It’s much like turning on the water faucet. Free flowing with no restriction.

Friends, I’m here to tell you this does not have to be an issue for you any longer, once you fully understand how to practice properly.

You see, whether it’s rock and roll, country, jazz, or blues etc…the pro’s all have one thing in common, their left and right hands are in perfect sync with each other on command. This means they’re able to use their speed picking techniques when desired, including many other
types of techniques as well.

Note: Always view your techniques as tools. This is critical.

Tools are needed to complete any kind of project. Guitar playing is no different. Tools, or(techniques), are needed to complete a guitar solo or guitar lead structure within a song. SpeedPicking is only one of many tools used.

Having said this, let’s look at some problem issues that you might be facing when speed picking.

Examples:

1.) Is one of your hands faster than the other, such as your picking hand picking faster than your fretting hand can fret, or your fretting hand fretting faster than your picking hand can pick??

2.) Do you find yourself restricted to going up and down scales for speed purposes?

3.) Do you sometimes stumble when trying to play fast

4.) Do you feel out of control when you play fast?

5.) Do you feel like you’re in a rut at times?

All of these things are very common for guitar players; it’s a part of natural growth as a guitarist. However, there comes a time in every guitar players learning path when they discover how to practice properly, and where to focus your efforts for maximum results.

The first thing I recommend is getting a metronome. This is something you’ll use forever. The metronome is the key to your success. It’s how you’ll monitor your progress as well as pinpointing where you are right now.

Play a fast repetitive style guitar lick that you are comfortable with, and find out where you max out on the metronome. For example you might play a lick that matches up on the metronome at 128 beats per minute.

Once you have that number in mind, begin to work on the same lick by reverse engineering it. Start playing it slower and slower and slower until it’s almost stopping. Make this last for several minutes.

While you’re doing this focus extremely hard on exactly what the left and right hand are doing together at the same time. Each little mechanical movement your fingers make, you want to try and register in your brain. The flow, and sensation of what it feels like to mechanically work both hands together.

Do this for several minutes very slow. It will take some getting use to when trying to concentrate that hard, but you need to do it. It’s critical.

This is where all the guitar speed and guitar tone come from, the lick needs to be embedded clearly in the brain, as to what the left and right hand are doing EXACTLY.

Once you feel you have control over that, at a slow speed, start playing a little faster and then a little faster until you get back to the original (max out) number you started with on the metronome.

Continue playing the lick for 2 full minutes, going up one increment at a time on the metronome. Do Not Cheat! Again, this is crucial. 2 full minutes per increment. No less.

As you continue to climb, be sure to stop when you know your getting over your head. It needs to be in perfect sync or just stop on that number.

That is the number you are going to try and beat every day. You must practice the same exact way every time, for this to work properly.

If done correctly, you’ll see amazing results in days!! If you want to achieve guitarstar/rockstar status, this is the path you’ll be taking.

There are several other points of interest that should be addressed that will also help increase your speed picking, such as…

  • Alternate picking only

  • Picking on the very tip of the pick

  • Having a pivot point to work from

  • Equal picking attack on up and down strokes

  • Where to actually place the pick on the string for tone purposes

  • What type of picks to use

  • Etc…

If you’re interested in seeing speed picking techniques demonstrated, you’ll be very pleased with the “Speed Picking Guitar" DVD from Top Fuel Guitar,

Titled: “Speed Picking Techniques”.

This DVD explains many of the crucial elements involved in accurate speed picking. Though it’s used to develop amazing speed, keep in mind it will clean up your guitar picking overall, not just fast playing.

I hope this helps take your playing to the next level.

Until Next time,

Robert Lee Molton
